David was watching television with his wife when she began having seizures. Now she needs full-time care.
David Cesar has been caring for his wife, Bruna de Sousa, 26, for the past two years. She is in a vegetative state. The 28-year-old Brazilian dedicates his life to the well-being of the woman he loves.
Bruna suffered a cardiac arrest, leaving her with permanent disabilities, including mental impairment and arrhythmia. She has an ostomy and is fed through a feeding tube. It all happened very quickly. They were watching television when Bruna began to feel unwell and started having seizures.
“In a matter of 3 minutes she lost all vital signs. We rushed to the hospital, and they managed to resuscitate her after 25 minutes, but she was without oxygen for a long time,” David told Razões para Acreditar.
Bruna suffered from a disorder that does not affect the most basic functions of the nervous system, but which makes it impossible for the person to perceive anything in themselves or their surroundings.
For over a year and a half, specifically since 2019, she has been cared for at home. This sometimes requires specialist support, and obviously, an expensive medication regimen.
David is a full-time caregiver for Bruna. Unemployed, he has faced many hardships. What he earns working as a ride-hailing driver in Maracanaú (CE) doesn’t even cover his wife’s basic needs.
The young man began raising money, managing to collect $28,000; however, Bruna’s monthly costs remain very high and he still needs more money.
“We haven’t been able to secure his retirement yet. But two volunteer lawyers are helping us. We’re living off donations,” David told Razões para Acreditar.
After a long time, thanks to the collaboration of neurologists, David learned of a drug in Canada.
If Bruna succeeds, she must take the product for three years and also undergo physical therapy. This treatment costs at least 100,000 reais (almost $19,000).
Now David is trying to raise money to get the medication and VOAA is helping him.
