On the day of the funeral, family, friends, comrades in arms, and neighbors gathered to bid farewell to an officer who had given his life for his country. The air was heavy with sadness, and the flowers covering the coffin seemed subdued in the face of collective grief. The unexpected irruption
Amid the silence, a heartbreaking howl broke the calm. From the crowd emerged an imposing German shepherd: the officer’s inseparable companion. She walked slowly, with heavy steps, until she stopped in front of the coffin. With a leap, she landed on the lid, scratching with her paws and moaning with a pain that moved everyone.
Those present tried to remove it, but the dog resisted. She barked loudly, as if trying to convey a message that was impossible to ignore.
The decision of the soul
Suddenly, the dog stopped. Exhausted, she lay back on the wood of the coffin. The officer’s widow approached to reassure her, convinced that she would obey her. However, as she did so, she let out a scream that chilled everyone’s blood:
— Oh my God! He’s not breathing!
The faithful companion had decided to follow her master even in death. She had breathed her last over the coffin of the man who had been her guide, protector, and friend.
A double burial
The silence that followed was absolute. No one could believe what was happening. Amidst tears and astonishment, the family and comrades made a unanimous decision: the dog would be buried next to the officer, at the foot of his grave.
In this way, man and animal were united forever, beyond life and death.
