US Embassy regrets murder of agent in Tijuana
The U.S. Embassy in Mexico lamented the murder of Commander Abigail Esparza while attempting to capture an American fugitive in Baja California.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico expressed its regret over the murder of Abigail Esparza Reyes, head of liaison for the Baja California State Citizen Security Force (FESC), while attempting to capture a fugitive from U.S. justice.
On social media, the Embassy, through press attaché David Arizmendi, indicated that Mexican authorities will redouble their cooperation with Mexico to ensure the murder does not go unpunished.
The U.S. government is working closely with Baja California state government authorities to share information and ensure we bring this fugitive to justice as quickly as possible.
“The horrific murder of Commander Esparza is a testament to the seriousness of the security challenges facing Mexico and the United States, and the importance of bilateral cooperation in addressing these threats,” he said.
According to local media reports, Esparza Reyes was murdered on Wednesday in Tijuana as the commander and a group of agents attempted to apprehend César Hernández, a U.S. fugitive convicted of first-degree murder in Los Angeles County.
The killer opened fire on the officers when he realized he was about to be arrested, and managed to escape despite the crowd surrounding him.
“Commander Esparza will be remembered as a true hero who was killed while bravely supporting binational efforts to maintain the security of our countries,” the Embassy stated.
