Josh Ryan Evans, the actor who portrayed the young Grinch in the beloved 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas, tragically passed away on August 5, 2002, at the age of 20. Born on January 10, 1982, Evans was known for his unique appearance and voice, which gave him the youthful qualities of a child despite being in his late teens. He had a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia, which made him 3ft 2in tall when he passed away. Evans also suffered from heart problems throughout his life, undergoing numerous surgeries as a child.
During his recovery from these surgeries, Evans developed a love for TV and movies, which ultimately inspired him to pursue a career in acting. He began appearing in television commercials at the age of 12 and made his film debut in 1999 in Baby Geniuses. However, his breakthrough role came in 2000 when he was cast as the young Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, playing the child version of Jim Carrey’s iconic character. The role required Evans to endure long hours in the makeup chair, sometimes spending up to five and a half hours each day transforming into the Grinch. Despite the challenges, Evans was enthusiastic about the experience and built a strong rapport with director Ron Howard. Howard later shared that Evans brought a special depth and emotion to the role, which had initially been planned as a minor character but was expanded after Howard saw Evans’ talent.

Following his success in The Grinch, Evans starred as Timmy Lenox, a living doll, in the NBC soap opera Passions. His portrayal of Timmy earned him multiple awards, including a Hollywood Reporter YoungStar Award for Best Young Actor in a Daytime TV Series. Evans seemed to be on the brink of stardom when his life was cut short.
In a tragic and eerie coincidence, on the same day that Evans passed away, an episode of Passions aired in which his character, Timmy, also passed away. The episode had been taped weeks prior, and originally, Timmy was supposed to return as an angel in later episodes. However, following Evans’ sudden death, the producers decided to dedicate the episode to his memory, canceling the planned return of the character.
NBC issued a statement expressing their sorrow, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of Josh Ryan Evans. He was a truly unique talent with a remarkable spirit. He will be sorely missed by his Passions family and by all of us at NBC.”

Evans’ passing remains a heartbreaking moment in the entertainment world, and the coincidence of his death aligning with his character’s death on television only added to the tragedy of the loss. He is remembered as a talented actor whose bright future was tragically cut short.
